Washington D.C., 30 September 2024 – The Embassy of Colombia in the United States marked Hispanic Heritage Month with a spirited celebration of the “Tribute to the Feria de Cali” at the Official Residence in Washington D.C.
The event spotlighted Cali’s flourishing creative industries, paying special homage to Afro-Colombian fashion and music, bringing the vibrant cultural soul of Cali directly to an international audience. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Daniel García-Peña Jaramillo underscored Colombia's dedication to Diplomacy of the People, emphasising the government's commitment, under President Gustavo Petro and Vice President Francia Márquez, to elevating Colombia’s cultural and Afro-Colombian legacy on the global stage.
The evening opened with an insightful discussion on the global impact of the Feria de Cali, setting the tone for the night’s celebration. Guests were then treated to an electrifying performance by the Mulato Cabaret Salsa School, which effortlessly transported the audience to the heart of Cali through its exhilarating rhythms.
The highlight of the evening was an Afro-Colombian fashion show, directed by internationally acclaimed designer Edwin D’Angelo, featuring collections by Martha Ruiz, Lina Muñetón, and Mitchel Ruiz. The show expertly wove together the threads of Afro-Colombian heritage and contemporary fashion, revealing the depth of the nation’s artistic talent.
This celebration not only showcased the rich cultural tapestry of Colombia but also reinforced the growing cultural and diplomatic ties between Colombia and the United States—reminding us all of the power of diversity, inclusion, and shared heritage in shaping global connections.
