Washington D.C., 26 July 2024 – The Ambassador of Colombia to the United States, Daniel García-Peña, together with the Director General of the Colombian National Police, General William Salamanca, and a delegation of senior officials, embarked on a two-day agenda to enhance bilateral security cooperation.
Ambassador García-Peña and General Salamanca engaged with officials from the Department of Defense and the Department of State, as well as advancing a bipartisan agenda in the U.S. Congress. In these discussions, they highlighted the heroism and professionalism of the Colombian Police, addressed efforts against transnational organized crime, and discussed Colombia's inclusion in national defense projects and the role of the police therein. U.S. officials acknowledged the significance of over 40 years of bilateral cooperation in strengthening institutional capabilities and hemispheric security.
The visit also included a meeting on hemispheric security with Daniel Erikson, Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council. This discussion underscored the importance of strategic and effective cooperation in addressing transnational threats affecting the region.
Ambassador García-Peña stated: "Colombia and the United States are committed to working together towards a safer hemisphere. Continuous cooperation, alongside the exchange of expertise and knowledge, is vital in tackling our shared security challenges. This visit reaffirms our strong bilateral relationship and our dedication to the pursuit of peace."
General Salamanca remarked: "The relationship with the United States is a fundamental pillar of our security strategies. Through this visit, we aim to consolidate and expand our cooperation, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated approach in the fight against transnational crime."
