Thursday, 14 November 2024

The Embassy of Colombia in the United States, the Gabo Foundation, and Netflix came together to celebrate the launch of the series adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s literary masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, ahead of its global premiere on 11 December.

Ambassador Daniel García-Peña welcomed prominent figures from political, diplomatic, cultural, and international organisations to honour One Hundred Years of Solitude and the creative talent of Colombia.

The production of One Hundred Years of Solitude represents one of the most ambitious audiovisual projects in Latin America’s history. Directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López, the series was filmed entirely in Colombia with the support of the Nobel laureate’s family and under Colombia’s Film Fund Law.

The Colombian Ambassador to the United States, Daniel García-Peña, highlighted "The release of this adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, is not just a cinematic triumph but a testament to the power of Colombia's creative brilliance. This project embodies the vision of Colombia as a hub for world-class audiovisual production, supported by our innovative film incentives and the talent of our artists and creators. It is a celebration of our heritage, our resilience, and our vibrant culture, inviting the world to experience the magic of Macondo and the boundless possibilities of Colombian creativity."

Meanwhile, Daniel Marquínez, Director of Special Projects at the Gabo Foundation, commented that the series represents an opportunity to introduce Gabriel García Márquez's work and his legacy, to broader and younger audiences. For García Márquez, his work was a way to break the isolation of Latin America, and this series makes a significant and valuable contribution to that mission by promoting stories from the global south.

In recent years, Colombia has made significant strides to boost its audiovisual industry through incentives and policies, nurturing an ecosystem of local services and talent.
