Commemorating the 214th Anniversary of the Colombian National Army

In Washington, Colombia's diplomatic mission and military attachés also mark 205 years since the battle of Boyacá.

The Embassy of Colombia in Washington, D.C., hosted members of the Colombian community, foreign dignitaries, representatives from the United States armed forces and of other various embassies in Washington, D.C., at a commemorative event to mark the 214th anniversary of the Colombian National Army and the 205th anniversary of the Battle of Boyacá.

The day's observances began with an eucharistic celebration at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, where attendees paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have served in the Colombian National Army and followed by a floral wreath ceremony at the Embassy of Colombia, a symbolic gesture reflecting our steadfast commitment to peace and gratitude to our country's armed forces.

His Excellency, Ambassador Daniel García-Peña, addressed the assembly with remarks highlighting the enduring significance of these historical milestones. "Today, we celebrate not just our victories but the enduring spirit of the Colombian people," he stated. "The Battle of Boyacá was the dawn of independence for Colombia, and since our National Army has been a bastion of resilience and duty."

Colonel Ricardo León Agudelo Ayala, Military Attaché of Colombia to the United States, underscored the occasion by saying, "The bravery and dedication of our armed forces are deeply rooted in our nation's history. Today's celebration is a testament to our tenacious commitment to defending our sovereignty."

Ambassador Daniel García-Peña expressed Colombia's gratitude to 99 year-old First Class Sergeant Bernardo Herrera Navarrete, a distinguished veteran of the National Army of Colombia, retired since 1969. Sergeant Herrera was also presented with the official emblem of Colombian National Army.

This event served as a reminder of Colombia's rich history and its ongoing efforts to achieve long-lasting peace. As we reflect on these historic events, we reaffirm our dedication to building a future marked by cooperation, progress, and enduring peace.
