Colombian Peace Commissioner Otty Patiño Visits Washington to Strengthen Cooperation on Peace Efforts

Peace Commissioner Otty Patiño embarked on a visit to Washington, D.C. His agenda included meetings to bolster collaboration between Colombia and the United States on initiatives promoting peace, human rights, and social justice—key pillars of the bilateral relationship.

During his visit, Commissioner Patiño engaged with representatives from the National Security Council at the White House. These discussions focused on advancing sustainable peace in Colombia, addressing the structural challenges perpetuating conflict in historically marginalised regions. At the U.S. Department of State, Patiño's meetings involved key offices to explore regional approaches to development and peacebuilding, ensure human rights protections in conflict-affected territories, and strengthen bilateral strategies to combat illicit economies and enhance security.

On Capitol Hill, Commissioner Patiño met with members of the U.S. Congress to reinforce bipartisan support for Colombia's peace initiatives, emphasising the importance of sustainable solutions that empower vulnerable communities and promote inclusive development.

In addition to government meetings, Patiño engaged with representatives from leading human rights and peacebuilding NGOs and the U.S. Agency for International Development. These organisations play a critical role in advancing community-based projects that address social inclusion, economic inequality, and the institutional reforms needed to sustain peace.

"The enduring partnership between Colombia and the United States is a cornerstone of our shared commitment to peace. Together, we are advancing initiatives that not only address the roots of conflict but also build a future grounded in justice, inclusion, and prosperity for all Colombians," said Ambassador Daniel García-Peña.
