Washington, D.C., November 13, 2024 — The Embassy of Colombia to the United States, in partnership with the Centre for Reproductive Rights, hosted a panel discussion event to highlight Colombia's groundbreaking work in recognising and addressing reproductive violence within its transitional justice framework.
The event underscored the progress made by Colombia's Truth Commission (CEV) and the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) in documenting and addressing reproductive violence—a historically neglected form of gender-based harm.
Ambassador Daniel García-Peña highlighted the Truth Commission's pioneering recognition of reproductive violence as a distinct harm. He also shed light on the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) groundbreaking investigations under Macrocaso 11, addressing violence tied to gender identity and sexual orientation.
"Colombia's innovative approach to transitional justice is setting a global precedent," said the Ambassador, reinforcing the significance of these findings as a model for other nations addressing post-conflict justice and gender equity.
Panellists shared insights on the intersectional impact of reproductive violence and its broader implications for justice and reparations. These insights reaffirm Colombia's leadership in justice and provide a framework for other nations addressing post-conflict gender-based violence.
