Governments are assessed by its citizens and the international community by their results. Some significant figures of Colombia´s path towards progress are:

  • Social programs went from representing 13.4 percent of the GDP in 2002, to 16.3 percent of the GDP in 2007, an increase of three points, with social expenditures being four times higher than defense expenditures.  
  • The unemployment rate went from 15.7% in 2002 to 11.1% in 2007.
  • Until 2005, the country had 3 Free Trade Agreements with 9 countries. In the year 2006 an agreement of free commerce with Chile was subscribed; in 2007 the agreement of free commerce with the countries of the North Triangle of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador) was subscribed and this year the deepening in the existing agreement with Cuba will begin. At the moment, there are negotiations of 3 additional Free Trade Agreements (With Canada, EFTA (Swiss, Norway, Iceland and Leichtentain) and the European Union). Additionally 5 investment agreements with equal amount of countries have been negotiated.
  • In 2002, 566,761 foreign visitors came to Colombia and in 2006 1,195,440 travelers were attracted to the country. Taking into account the visitors who travel by land in those same years, we pass from 1.174.564 to 2.145.330. Last year alone, Colombian tourism grew by 13.5%, while overall world tourism grew at 6% and Latin America tourism grew by 7%.
  • In 2006 direct foreign investment in Colombia reached US$ 6,464 million, representing a growth rate of 203% over the results for 2002. At the close of the third trimester, direct foreign investment increased upto US$6.527 million with a 45% increment in comparison to the same period of 2006. The accumulated value to the third semester surpassed the amount registered in 2006 (US$ 6.463 million).
  • Until mid February of 2008, twenty (20) Legal Stability Contracts requests have been approved which will generate investments of approximately $ 7 billion, 20,000 indirect jobs and 20,000 direct ones. Likewise, 8 contracts have been subscribed.
