Celebration of the Bicentennial of Colombia's Independence
Over nine hundred guests celebrated the Bicentennial of Colombia’s Independence, at the Organization of American States in Washington D.C. on the 17th of July, 2010. At a party co-sponsored by the Colombian Embassy to the U.S., the mission of Colombia to the OAS, and Colombian organization Todos por Colombia, guests danced to Banda la República, who flew in from Medellín for the celebration. Local musicians, corporate sponsors from Colombia and the United States, and a team of volunteers made the party a great success.

Heart of the Amazon
National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis travels deep into the rain forest to visit the Barasana people of Colombia. It is the story of the Barasana and their neighbors on the Río Piraparana in the remote reaches of the Northwest Amazon . The film, featuring the work of Martin von Hildebrand and Fundación Gaia Amazonas, is a celebration of cultural survival and rebirth, thanks in good measure to progressive decisions made by the Colombian government. It will be Introduced by Dr. Davis, who will also participate in a discussion after the screening with Dr. Martin von Hildebrand, an ethnologist who has advocated in defense of the rights of the Barasana and other indigenous peoples of Amazonia.

Concert with Grupo Creole and Dinner
The Embassy of Colombia, the Congressional Black Caucus and the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture co hosted a dinner, to celebrate Black History Month. Featuring the Caribbean music of Grupo Creole, from the Colombian island of San Andrés, guests from the worlds of Government, business and culture, dined and danced at the residence of the Colombian Ambassador, Carolina Barco. Grupo Creole at the Kennedy Center
Grupo Creole hails from the heart of Colombia’s Caribbean – the islands of San Andres and Providencia. Founded by maestro Orston Christopher in 1986, the group interprets rhythms characteristic of their heritage: Calypso, Mentó, Shottish, Quadrille, Reggae, Polka, among others, and invites the audience to an authentic Caribbean fiesta.
